The metre gauge, spanning 1000 mm (3 ft 3 3/8 in) between tracks, was introduced as a cost-effective alternative. Though the Nilgiri Mountain Railway retains this gauge as a legacy, the ambitious "Unigauge" project aims to convert all metre gauge lines to the broader gauge.
Narrow Gauge: Small Lines, Big Adventures
True to its name, the narrow gauge boasts tracks spaced at 762 mm (2 ft 6 in) or 610 mm (2 ft). While comprising only about 2% of the total Indian rail network, these narrow lines offer unique and picturesque experiences, like the UNESCO World Heritage Darjeeling Mountain Railway and the popular Kalka-Shimla Railway.
